Society for Kids’ Care Receives Feasibility Study Funding for the New Mountainview Child Development Hub

Sparwood, BC – In partnership with School District No. 5 (Southeast Kootenay), the Society for Kids’ Care has received funding from Teck Resources Limited and Community Futures East Kootenay to proceed with a feasibility study to develop the Mountainview Child Development Hub. Located in Sparwood, BC, this center for early childhood learning and development will house primary-aged public school operations, expand the existing daycare spaces, create preschool spaces, and provide before and after school care spaces. The feasibility study will determine the viability and sizing of each of the programs proposed for the space, as well as possible modifications or extensions to the building.

The demand for childcare in the Elk Valley is extremely high and continues to grow, leaving many families unable to find part-time or full-time childcare. With more than 130 children on the Sparwood Treehouse Daycare wait list and the Frank J Mitchell Elementary School at capacity, Sparwood is in critical need of additional space to accommodate the growing school age population.

The project is proposed to be located at the Mountainview School building at 421 Pine Avenue when the current occupant’s lease expires in 2026. Spaces for child development practitioners in mental health, supported child development, speech language pathology, and occupational therapy fields; a commercial kitchen to support school breakfast and lunch programs as part of the BC Feeding Futures initiative in the Elk Valley; and meeting and gymnasium facilities available to the community to rent for special events are also under consideration.
